The last few weeks were spent trying to shoot at targets and things. Well, there was no great organisation there, it was very hit or miss, there was no question of finding out whether people had actually hit the targets or not, so eventually, being a very energetic little so-and-so in those days, when I took command, I said, “This is absolute nonsense, we’re just wasting money and time on this.” So, there was a very good armament officer at the Group Headquarters called Mickey Dwyer, and he was very supportive. So I then got increasing numbers of Battles and worked out a system that I made these people hit a target eight times before they left the OTU. We had to set up a thing on the coast. We used to fly up the coast because the air firing was over the coast, south of Silloth. We had a little man parked out there and he was given a schedule of when the aircraft were meant to arrive, what times, and we knew what numbers had been given people, and he was to arrange to be climbing his weary way up and down, recording firing successes or otherwise.
